Bersih 3.0 impact may last four months

vox populi small thumbnailSwipenter: The impact of Bersih 3.0 and its subsequent effects are long-lasting and not just of four months' duration.

Bersih 2.0 and Bersih 3.0 are the direct result of Bersih 1.0. Without Bersih 1.0, there won't be 2.0 and 3.0. How can one then conclude that the impact of Bersih is of such limited duration?

If the governance of the prevailing administration of the day, be it under BN or Pakatan Rakyat, is not up to the expectations of the rakyat then another Bersih (4.0) would materialise to force changes.

The effects of the birth of Bersih movement is not going away anytime soon. In fact, it is just beginning to take root in the psyche of the rakyat as a means for political change.

Have the effects and impact of the civil rights movement of the 1960s in the United States gone away? The answer is "No".

Then why should the impact and effects of Bersih just disappear in a matter of four months?

Unspin: Even without Bersih 3.0, a lot of people are quietly seething with anger with regard to the blatant corruption, bigotry and arrogance of this racist regime.

Combined with the fact that they are shamelessly rigging the electoral roll, culminated with Bersih 3.0 and the now infamous police riot, we may have a ‘perfect storm'.

If I were PM Najib Razak, I would be extremely worried regardless of when the general election is called. Since 2008, he had a lot of opportunities to win back some non-partisan votes, but he chickened out every time some hardliners objected to his reformation plans.

That leaves him with the only thing he does best, which is to give away goodies and taxpayers' money. How long can the effect of bribing the electorate last? Probably one week, at most.

Rend: Many Indian Malaysians realised that for all the goodies that BN is throwing at them, it's just simply to fish for votes and because the ruling coalition is scared of Pakatan Rakyat. They won't even get peanuts if not because of Pakatan's strong performance.

So, many of us choose to take whatever BN gives, act as though we are supporting BN but we will still vote Pakatan silently.
None of my family members, friends or relatives, around 25 eligible voters (who received the RM500 Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia or BR1M) whom I asked, say they will vote BN no matter what they give.

Only some rural Indians are unfortunately brainwashed by all the goodies and support BN, the same as Sarawak's rural folk.

1M: Compliments must also be given to the Election Commission (EC), Utusan Malaysia, ex-PM Mahathir Mohamad, Malay rights NGO Perkasa and all the Umno-backed NGOs. With their help, the impact will last longer.

Retnam: Here in Perak, Malays feel that the RM500 BR1M is sin money. If they vote for BN the sin is compounded. But if they vote for Pakatan, the sin is removed.


Decision not to give permit to Mkini 'unconstitutional'

Mushiro: Good arguments by Malaysiakini's lawyers. But then, this is a political case that will affect and challenge the propaganda machinery of Umno.

Such cases are decided by the attorney-general (AG) himself and they will always be in favour of Umno. The court case is just a formality.

Domcr2001: The Home Ministry is afraid that Malaysiakini will cause the Umno-owned New Straits Times (NST) to close shop because it will report news as it is - without fear or favour.

They only want ‘liespapers', not newspapers.

Isa@1penyu: Malaysiakini, ask yourself have you been fair in reporting... deep inside you know this is more a mouthpiece for Pakatan.

Tholu: Isa@1penyu, don't make comments if you have mud instead of brain in your skull. Was publishing licence for Harakah, Rocket and Suara Keadilan given on condition that it should not act as a mouthpiece of the party that owns it?

Are not the mainstream newspapers such as Utusan Malaysia, New Straits Times and The Star mouthpieces of Umno-BN? So where does it pain you if Malaysiakini is going to be a mouthpiece of Pakatan?

Are you trying to say that the Home Ministry should and will approve publishing licences to print media that will only publish news favouring Umno-BN?

By the way, if are able to comment on news in Malaysiakini, it means you have subscribed to it. And if so, are you blind to the fact that it publishes news as it is, whether they are news from the government or the opposition.

I have travelled around the world and lived in numerous cities and seen freedom of the press in practice. If the press is irrelevant, it goes out of business. But if a country's media is curbed, the whole country goes out of business.
