T'ganu moves to resolve 'two Friday prayers' issue

The Terengganu government has taken comprehensive measures to resolve the issue of two Friday prayers being conducted in a congregation which is still happening in Hulu Besut.

State Religious and Information Committee chairperson Khazan Che Mat said the state government had taken several steps including providing information on the Islamic ruling on two Friday prayers in a congregation and the fatwa (edict) issued in 1981 on a similar case in Terengganu.
“The government has investigated and informed the mosques involved that if it meets the condition for a large village with many residents, approval will be given to build two mosques,” he said yesterday.
He was replying to a question from Nawi Mohamad (BN-Hulu Besut) on actions taken by the government to overcome the problem of two Friday prayers in a village which is still happening in Hulu Besut.
Elaborating, Khazan said a large section of them involved in the Friday prayers at two mosques in a village admitted they were bound by the ruling made by their party leader before this.
Meanwhile, Khazan said among the main causes of divorce in Terengganu according to the Terengganu Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT) was the irresponsible attitude of the husband or wife.
“Apart from that, there were also the involvement of a third party, social pressure, communication problems, lack of religious knowledge, economic woes and family interference.”
Khazan said this in reply to a question from Ramlan Ali (BN-Jabi) on the total number of marriages and divorces registered in the state last year.
He said there were 10,982 marriages and 2,367 divorce cases registered in Terengganu in 2011.
To curb divorce, he said various programmes had been implemented by the government including holding pre-marriage courses to provide better understanding of a couple’s responsibilities in a marriage.
Five affordable housing projects completed
The state assembly was also told that the state government had completed five affordable housing projects from 2008 until last year involving 678 units.
Menteri Besar Ahmad Said said during the period, three more low-cost housing projects with 523 units were also completed, bringing the total to 1,201 units completed under the two projects.
According to him, the state government planned to build about 10,000 units of affordable and low-cost houses from 2008 to 2013.
He was replying to a question from Harun Taib (PAS-Manir) at the 12th state legislative assembly meeting which began on Monday.
The house will sit again today.
