Consumer Price Index rises 2.1pct in March

Malaysia’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) in March 2012 rose 2.1 percent to 104.5 from 102.4 in the same month last year.

When compared with the previous month, the CPI was unchanged at 104.5, the Statistic Department said in a statement today.
The CPI for the January to March 2012 period increased 2.3 percent to 104.5 compared with 102.2 in the same period last year.
The index for food and non-alcoholic beverages and non-food for March 2012 showed increase of 2.9 and 1.7 percent, respectively, compared to the same month last year.
For the period January to March 2012, the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages and non-food increased by 3.6 percent and 1.7 per cent, respectively.
Compared with the previous month, the index for food and non alcoholic beverages and non-food was unchanged at 106.7 and 103.5, respectively.
The 2.3 percent increase in the CPI was brought about by increases observed in the indices of all the main groups except those of communication (-0.6 percent) and clothing and footwear (-0.4 percent).
Notable increases among the main groups with high weights were food and non-alcoholic beverages (+3.6 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (+1.9 percent) and transport (+1.5 percent).
Other increases were restaurants and hotels (+3.9 percent); recreation services and culture (+3.1 percent); health (+2.2 percent); furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (+2.1 percent); while both education and miscellaneous goods and services was up by 2.9 percent.
