Scomi Engineering bids for Chennai monorail project

Scomi Engineering Bhd is hopeful that its bid for the monorail project in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, will succeed.

“The Chennai tender is coming up. We hope to be shortlisted,” Scomi Engineering country president Kanesan Velupillai told Bernama.
The 111km monorail project in India’s fifth most populous state is phase one of the 300km stretch which the state government plans to build to ease traffic flow.
If successful, it would be Scomi’s biggest ever monorail project.
Besides Chennai, Scomi was also hopeful of the Delhi monorail project, Kanesan said.
He said Chennai and Delhi would be the key projects among monorail projects the company was vying for in various Indian cities.
In India, he said Scomi emerged as a well-recognised brand after successfully implementing the country’s first monorail project in the financial district of Mumbai.
Scomi and its consortium partner, Larsen & Toubro, secured the RM1.846 billion Mumbai monorail project in November 2008.
“Both big states and small states in India do write to us to come and see the projects in Mumbai. Now, with the train running and once the commercial operations begin, we could see more interest coming our way,” he said.
Scomi has also entered into a joint bidding agreement with Geodesic Techniques Pvt Ltd for the proposed 59km monorail line in Bangalore.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Tata Realty and Infrastructure Ltd, the company plans to pursue a modern mass transportation system project in Ludhiana.
“The metro system supports the long-haul transportation of the city and becomes the spine of the city.
“And then you have the monorail as the branch network that serves as the feeder system by disbursing the huge traffic in an effective way and interconnecting all the multiple models of bus, metro, monorail and suburban railway,” Kanesan said.
The monorail business was estimated to be worth US$15 billion in the next five years in India alone, he said.
Scomi’s operation in India also serves Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, whose governments have masterplans for monorail projects.
“We are actively talking to them and we need to work on the funding,” Kanesan said.
