According to the Malay-language broadsheet Utusan Malaysia, Arifin (right) said the judiciary views such acts seriously and will ensure that it can act without fear or favour.
“One should never smear the integrity and dignity of the judiciary simply because we are unhappy with a verdict,” he was quoted as saying.
He added that the judiciary will cite parties for contempt not to protect judges but the system’s dignity.
Citing a 1986 Lord Denning judgment, he reminded the public that judges cannot be dragged into controversies by commenting on public criticisms.
Instead of criticising publically, he said, dissatisfaction should be expressed through proper channels as judges are ordinary people who make mistakes and are open to such critique.
Arifin had said this during the oath-taking ceremony of four Federal Court judges, two Court of Appeal judges, three High Court of Malaya judges and two Sabah and Sarawak High Court judges.
