Asian illegal population in USA proliferating

The population of undocumented aliens from the Asian continent in the United States has substantially proliferated in recent years, according to the latest report recently released by the Department of Homeland Security.

While the majority of the undocumented aliens in the United States had its roots in North America itself - an estimated 8.9 million or 77 percent of the total 11.5 million unauthorised immigrants living in the United States in 2011 came from North America, including Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America - the next biggest source of undocumented aliens was Asia (1.3 million) and, after it, South America (0.8 million).
The list of countries providing the maximum illegal population was headed by Mexico (6.8 million) followed by El Salvador (660,000), Guatemala (520,000) and Honduras (380,000). They were followed, in that order, by China (280,000), the Philippines (270,000) and India (230,000). Although placed fifth in the list of countries from where undocumented aliens came, China heads the Asian list.
South Korea, Ecuador (each 210,000) and Vietnam (170,000) were next in the sequence order.
There is some confusion over the number of undocumented persons from Malaysia; the estimates can range from 15,000 to nearly 35,000, depending on what agency is providing the source of information.
The Malaysian consulate-general in New York, usually, does what is described as a “guestimate” but admits that it cannot give a precise figure because such Malaysian nationals do not, generally, come forth and register themselves with the consular representation. However, such nationals are provided the consular services they may need.
Although ranking seventh, the Indian undocumented population has, in fact, doubled between 2000 and 2011, according to the US Homeland Security report.
During the same period, the total number of illegal foreign immigrants increased from 8.46 million to 11.51 million.
The Cuban-born population living in the United States is excluded from the estimates because, under immigration law, most Cubans get admission or, to use the local jargon, parole in the US and are eligible a year later to apply to adjust to legal permanent residency (LPR status).
Between 2000 and 2011, the highest rise in the undocumented population occurred amongst nationals from the North America region (2.8 million), according to the report.
