The Election Commission's (EC) report for the prime minister on missing names from the electoral roll in Selangor and erroneous ballot papers for the Sungai Lembing state seat in Pahang will be completed in two days.

According to Bernama today, its secretary Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said the report will be submitted to chairperson Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman for scrutiny.

Asked when it would be submitted to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, he replied: "I don't know because my responsibility is just to prepare the report for submission to the chairman."

Among others, the report clarifies the glitches in 56 polling districts in Selangor which prevented a large number of voters from casting their ballot papers.

This and other irregularities nationwide saw the commission come under fire from both government and opposition leaders.

Opposition parties have also called for a royal commission to be set-up to probe the matter and urged for a re-election to be held.

Expense statements

In another development, the EC today reminded candidates in the just-concluded general election to submit their expense statements to avoid action being taken against them.

Wan Ahmad said the candidates faced fine or disqualification from the next general election if they failed to hand in the statements 31 days after the results were gazetted.

He added that the results of the 11th general election were expected to be gazetted next week.

He said under the Election Offences Act 1954, elected representatives who did not submit the reports in time and failed to obtain an authorised excuse from the court faced a RM1,000 fine for each day they attended the Dewan Rakyat or State Legislative Assembly.

Wan Ahmad said candidates could submit the statements to state election officials as soon as the results were gazetted.

The election expense allowable for candidates were RM200,000 for parliamentary seats and RM100,000 for state seats.

The secretary said in the recent general election, the nomination for DAP candidate Cheah Kam Chiew for the Subang Jaya state seat was rejected because he did not submit his election expense statement following the previous general election.
