Despite having a “slim” chance of winning their case, three women activists who were sacked allegedly for their union activities 14 years ago believe it is worth taking the battle to the Federal Court.

S Koyilvani, Roshamiza Muhamad and A Kanniamah are left with this final option after the Court of Appeal allowed their former employer to appeal a High Court decision favouring the trio.

As such, the trio are now raising funds for their legal costs and are hoping to collect at least RM5,000.

Their leave application will be filed by a pro bono laywer on Mar 21.

According to Jeritan Rakyat Tertindas (Jerit) coordinator D Letchumi Devi, the women were employed by Guppy Industries in Balakong, Selangor, and formed the Guppy Union in 1997.

She said the factory had then raised the wages of their all-women employees by a mere 10 sen, resulting in much frustration.

“Four days after notifying the company of their intention to form a union (in 1998), all seven office bearers were suspended on various allegations,” Letchumi said in a statement today.
