Toll on 2nd Penang bridge set at RM7

Concessionaire Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) managing director Ir Dr Ismail Mohamed Taib said although the RM4.5 billion second bridge was twice longer than the first one, the toll rates would be the same.
The original plan was RM9.40 for the second bridge as the first was supposed to increase to RM9.
"Now that the first Penang bridge is confirmed at RM7, so we will follow," he told reporters after witnessing the installation of the last pier of the Second Penang Bridge at Batu Maung today.
It was earlier reported that the federal government had extended the concession period for the Penang Bridge to Dec 31, 2038 in exchange for a freeze on toll hikes.
Ismail said the Second Penang Bridge was more than 73 percent complete and there would be no revision on the construction cost of RM4.5 billion.
There are a total of 292 x 2 piers required to be built for the approach spans of the bridge. The casting of the final pier today is P291 north, the last pier for the approach spans of the bridge.
This was the work under Contract for Package One with total value of RM2.2 billion delivered by CHEC Construction (M) Sdn Bhd.
Ismail said with the balance of contract worth RM170 million to be delivered, CHEC was progressing with the construction of the bridge icon - the Cable Stayed Bridge at the main navigation span.
Longest bridge in Southeast Asia
As for Package Two with total contract value of RM1.55 billion currently being delivered by UEM Builders Bhd, the walking back of Launching Girder 1 and 2 has started and should reached P268 by end of this month.
Ismail said the launch of segmental box girder (SBG) was expected to continue and reach P292 north by end of June and south a week later.
He said the SBG installation from Batu Maung to P24 of the main navigation span was expected to be completed on Oct 14.
"CHEC will then continue construction of the concrete deck slab at P24 and the final closure of cable stayed at mid-span, between pylons of P26 and P27 by end of March next year," he added.
With 16.9km of marine structure, the second Penang Bridge is dubbed as the longest bridge in Southeast Asia and also the longest bridge in the world that incorporates the High Damping Rubber Bearing (HDRB) in its construction.
