Water supply interruption in Gombak, KL and Hulu Langat

Gombak, Kuala Lumpur and Hulu Langat are facing water supply interruption after two treatment plants were affected by a high rate of turbidity in the water owing to the flood-causing heavy rain yesterday, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) said today.

Syabas chief executive officer Ruslan Hassan said the Ampang Intake plant stopped operating at 7.30 pm after the operator, Puncak Niaga (M) Sdn Bhd (PNSB), temporarily shut down the plant.
“The heavy rain also resulted in the telecommunications line getting disconnected and uprooted trees blocking the entrance to the Ampang Intake plant,” he said in a statement.
The Ampang Intake plant supplies 19 million litres of potable water per day to 9,225 accounts in the Ampang area. The affected areas include Kampung Ampang Campuran, Lembah Jaya Utara, Kampung Tasek Permai, Kampung Tasek Tambahan Ampang, Mesra Ria Apartment, Taman Dagang Jaya, Taman Ampang Saujana, Lembah Jaya Selatan, Kampung Ampang Indah, Mulia Jaya and Kampung Bukit Sungai Putih.
“Syabas anticipated that the water supply will be fully restored in the areas getting their supply from the Ampang Intake plant in four days,” he said.
Ruslan said Syabas was channelling an alternative water supply from the Wangsa Maju plant to reduce the number of affected areas but 8,225 accounts in Ampang still faced interruption.
He said PNSB also informed that they had to reduce the water output from the Sungai Langat plant.
Although the rate of output was increased this morning, unscheduled interruption affected about 189,000 accounts in 182 areas in Hulu Langat and 105 areas in Kuala Lumpur, he said.
Syabas has brought out 42 tankers and 192 static tanks to supply water to the affected areas, he added.
He advised the people to exercise prudence in the consumption of water during the period of water supply interruption.

Maintenance at Sungai Selangor plant
In a separate statement, Syabas said maintenance of phase one of the Sungai Selangor plant would be undertaken by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash) on March 14 and 15 to avoid a breakdown that may trigger a more serious water supply disruption.
Syabas’s corporate affairs executive director Abdul Halem Mat Som said the maintenance work involved the replacement of several types of sluice valves, which was expected to take up to 12 hours to complete.
He was commenting on a statement by Selangor state executive councillor Xavier Jayakumar who had asked for expediting of the maintenance of the Sungai Selangor plant.
Meanwhile, Splash said in a statement that it would carry out the maintenance work at the plant, located at Jalan Bukit Badong, Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor, from 8am to 8pm on March 14.
