New STPM evaluation system to start this year

A new evaluation system for the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), which will replace the existing examination system, will start with Lower Six students this year.
A new evaluation system for the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), which will replace the existing examination system, will start with Lower Six students this year.
Malaysian Examinations Council chairperson Dr Mohd Noh Dalimin said it would entail two methods of evaluation assessment - school-based assessment with a weightage from 20 to 40 percent and final examination with a weightage from 60 to 80 percent.
He said the move was in line with the Education Ministry’s strive to make the assessment and evaluation system to be more holistic by emphasising on outcome-based education, which would focus on students and not too examination-oriented.
“The school-based assessment will be used on almost all Form Six subjects. This will go down in the MEC history in conducting public examinations for the past 30 years,” he said when announcing the 2011 STPM results in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said the school-based assessment comprised three types of course works - projects or assignments, laboratory works and field research - in the first, second and third terms for the duration of one and a half years of Form Six.
“Lower Six students this year, who will be the first cohort in the STPM new evaluation system, will sit for the first term Form Six examination in November,” he said.
Mohd Noh said the assessment of coursework would be carried by subject teachers in schools while the evaluation would be coordinated by the MEC.
He said the students’ achievements would be evaluated each term while examination results would also be announced each term, while the overall STPM results would be on a cumulative basis for the three terms.
One of the advantages of the system is that students are allowed to resit the first or/and second term examinations to improve their results at the end of the third term, he said, adding that even those who do not fare well in the third term examination are allowed to repeat it.
Mohd Noh said the duration of Form Six, the number of subjects offered (23 at present), the periods allocated and the grading system would remain unchanged.
