LRT RM7bil line extension launched

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) today launched its multi-billion ringgit Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line Extension Project (LEP) costing RM7 billion with the lifting of the first set of the 14,692 Segmental Box Girders (SBG) in Kuala Lumpur.

Prasarana Group managing director Shahril Mokhtar said the extension for the Ampang Line was 17.7km long with 11 new stations, while the Kelana Jaya Line extension was 17km long with 12 new stations.
“As one of the key initiatives under the National Key Result Areas (NKRA) the LEP would serve 500,000 passengers daily as it was located in highly populated and developing areas.
“The Ampang Line extension begins from the Seri Petaling station and ends at the new Putra Heights Station in Subang while the Kelana Jaya Line extension starts from the Kelana Jaya station before the tracks also end at the Putra Heights Station... both are expected to be completed in 2014,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.
Shahril said this LEP was a major effort by the government in transforming the country’s public transport services that had been entrusted on Prasarana which also included the upgrading of KL Monorail’s station and expansion of its fleet as well as upgrading the public bus services.
“The effect of LEP will be life-changing... it will enhance mobility for people in the Klang Valley which can also increase productivity and earnings for the people,” he added.
He said as a project of national interest and for the benefit of the people, it would create 8,000 to 10,000 new job opportunities and also business opportunities for the people.
“It has effectively provided a massive boost to the national economy especially in the generation of jobs and side business,” Shahril said.
He added that Prasarana also faces many challenges in completing the project, not only in construction but also social-related issues involving noise pollution and traffic disruption which is bound to inconvenience residents at certain track routes.
Meanwhile, Occupational Safety and Health Department (DOSH) director-general Dr Johari Basri said even though Prasarana aimed to complete this project as quickly as possible, it must strictly adhere to all safety standards set by DOSH.
“We will support Prasarana as they are working closely with us to ensure all safety requirements are closely adhered,” he said.
