MRT Corp today announced that it has signed the Points of Agreement (POA) with owners of six Jalan Sultan lots, guaranteeing to meet the previous demands of the land owners.

In a statement today, MRT Corp chief executive officer Azhar Abdul Hamid said the points, which will be included in the mutual agreement that is to be signed later include:
  • Withdrawal of land acquisition upon signing of the mutual agreement;
  • Guarantee of no demolition of existing buildings;
  • Relocation of building occupants for a maximum of six months during tunnelling;
  • Land titles endorsed with a statement to recognise the tunnel underneath the properties;
  • Fair compensation for inconveniences and loss of profits during tunnelling period.
“I commend the owners, whom I’m not at liberty to name upon their request, for their patience and understanding in cooperating with us for a win-win situation at the negotiating table for the past few months.

“This signing indicates significant progress in getting the MRT project up and running according to schedule,” Azhar said, noting that one of the six lots include a budget hotel.

A total of 21 lots are affected in by the MRT project, which will pass through the historical Chinatown area.
