Police are probing student leader Khalid Mohd Ismath for a speech he made during a Feb 23 Anything But Umno rally in Beranang, a small town near the Selangor-Negeri Sembilan border.

NONEConfirming this, Kajang OCPD Abdul Rashid Wahab said the deputy president of student NGO Kami is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948.

The UiTM student leader had delivered a speech alongside PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan, PAS MP for Shah Alam Khalid Samad and PKR assemblyperson for Sikamat Aminuddin Harun.

Speaking to Malaysiakini after being questioned for an hour at the Kajang police headquarters today, Khalid said police had quizzed him about the contents of his speech.

“But I did not answer and opted to answer in court,” he said, referring to a provision of the Criminal Procedure Code which allows this.

The student said he still does not know which part of his speech is allegedly seditious as police told his lawyer that they cannot disclose the police report against Khalid.

He was accompanied by counsel Farhana Abdul Halim from Lawyers for Liberty.

Shah Alam MP to meet police, too

Also questioned at the Kajang IPD today was Arutchelvan, who was accompanied by lawyer and social activist Haris Ibrahim.

Haris tweeted that the PSM leader had also opted to answer police questions in court.

“(Arutchelvan told police that) his being summoned is a form of harassment,” Haris posted on Twitter, during the questioning.

NONEShah Alam MP Khalid Samad (right) also received a telephone call from the police yesterday over the same matter.

He is scheduled to meet the police in the later part of next week as he will be out of town in the coming days.

“The police officers had video recorded the event, so I don't think it should be a problem clearing our names,” the MP said when contacted.
