The Election Commission (EC) today denied Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) allegations that it had illegally moved registered voters to other constituencies.

Its secretary, Kamaruddin Mohamed Baria, said the claims published in local dailies yesterday were untrue as matters regarding voters were dealt with in accordance with the law.

“The existing laws do not allow the EC to change the polling address of voters unless they request for it as stated under Clause 4, Article 119 of the  federal constitution.

“Subregulation 12(1) and (2) of the Election Regulations (Voters Registration) 2002 states that the EC can only change the polling address of a registered voter if the voter has completed Form A, which is a voter registration form,” he said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur.

On the Subang parliamentary constituency, he said, the EC received 2,352 new registration applications and 2,705 applications to change polling address for the fourth quarter of 2011.

“When the electoral roll was displayed, all names were listed, along with 1,146 names which have been marked as having changed their address,” he said.

PKR has claimed that Subang has been among the constituencies where the alleged manipulation took place.

Kamaruddin said checks by the EC when the electoral roll was displayed from Feb 8 to 14 showed that the constituency received 90 objections but they were regarding the eligibility of a military couple to vote.

On the rise in the number of voters in the constituency, Kamaruddin said EC statistics showed an increase of 2,487 voters from 2004 to 2006, bringing the total number of electors there to 71,441.
