Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali, who had recently caused a public outcry by giving away ‘ang pow’ in white envelopes, will distribute the money packets again tomorrow, this time in his constituency of Pasir Mas, Kelantan.

According to reports by some Chinese dailies, the Pasir Mas MP will attend a Chinese New Year event tomorrow night at a Chinese temple where he will give away 350 ang pow packets each containing RM100 to senior citizens, disabled people and single mothers.

NONEA spokeperson at Ibrahim’s operations centre in Pasir Mas told the Sin Chew daily that Ibrahim usually returns to the constituency every Thursday and visits residents there every Friday.

The daily claimed that some local Chinese will boycott the event because of his 'white ang pow' incident.

As a seasoned politician, Ibrahim should not have allowed the incident to have happened, they said.

His action of giving ang pow in white envelopes was disrespectful to Chinese culture and being insensitive to other races, they added.

A management committee member of the Chinese temple explained that the committee allowed Ibrahim to hold the event at the premises simply due to his capacity as the local MP.

Also, that the activity does not involve other organisations, apart from his Pasir Mas parliamentary office.

In a text message to Malaysiakini later today, Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali stressed the programme is not organised by the Malay rights group but by Ibrahim’s parliamentary office.

“There is no need to ask what colour of ‘ang pow’ will be distributed tomorrow in Ibrahim’s programme in his constituency. Before this, Ibrahim had distributed red ‘ang pow’ during Chinese New Year in Pasir Mas. Enough of playing up the issue of ‘ang pow’ colour,” he said.
