Don't be provoked, Keadilan supporters told

Keadilan has advised its supporters to exercise maximum restrain should "undesirable elements" go out of the way to create "incidents" that would then be blamed on the opposition party at the peaceful assembly outside the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) headquarters tomorrow.

Party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said that such "incidents" would allow those who are bent on crushing democratic dissent to arrest more individuals under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and weaken the movement for change.
"This is why caution and restraint would be very important in tomorrow's gathering," she said in a press statement today.
"We should not allow the enemies of democracy and social justice to derail our peaceful, constitutional struggle for a better Malaysia," she added.
Tomorrow, a delegation comprising Barisan Alternatif members of parliament and non-governmental representatives will be presenting a memorandum to Suhakam.
The memorandum is said to be on fundamental issues of public concern relating to human rights, democracy, good governance and the economy.
The event is also to commemorate the Black 14 gathering, marking the second anniversary of the sentencing of former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim for abuse of power.
BA-led delegation
Wan Azizah, who is also Anwar's wife, said that the memorandum was originally supposed to be presented by a group of concerned citizens committed to the reformasi struggle.
"However, since some of the key figures in the group have been arrested under the Internal Security Act, BA MPs have decided to lead the delegation to express their solidarity with the detainees and register their opposition to the ISA," she said.
Wan Azizah added that the presentation will be witnessed by a peaceful gathering of supporters of the struggle for social justice and democracy.
They will gather to give expression to a fundamental right entrenched in the Malaysian Constitution, the right to peaceful assembly, she said.
"We should not succumb to any attempt by anyone to provoke us to do anything untoward which might mar the memo presentation," she said, adding that after the memorandum has been presented, the gathering should disperse peacefully.
Seven reformasi activists have been arrested since Tuesday for 'threatening national security'. They are Black 14 organiser Saari Sungib, Keadilan vice-president Tian Chua, the party's Youth leaders, Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor, N Gobalakrishnan and Abdul Ghani Harun, Free Anwar Campaign (Freeanwar.com) webmaster Raja Petra Kamaruddin and former student leader and malaysiakini columnist Hishammuddin Rais.
