Pursue right to elect your mayor, KL folk told

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar is calling on the people of Kuala Lumpur to pursue the right to elect their mayor, as a check-and-balance on the City Hall's ever-growing expenditures.

In her Federal Territories Day message, Nurul Izzah said the Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) 2012 budget is RM2.3 billion, which equals the total budgets of the Selangor and Penang governments.
City Hall's budget for 2009, 2010 and 2011 were RM2.08 billion, RM2.12 billion and RM2.01 billion respectively.
"Is this amount being used properly? Did DBKL explain to the ratepayers on the usage of the money?" Nurul Izzah asked in a statement released today.
"Do we have a thorough feedback system to ensure that DBKL is spending the people's money in the most effective and efficient manner?"
These questions, the PKR vice-president added, could not be answered without the implementation of local government elections.
She said local government elections, which have been shelved in KL since 1965, should be implemented again right away.
"The time has come for us to enjoy a DBKL that can be held responsible to the ratepayers, and can be replaced if it refuses to listen," said Nurul Izzah.
"The time has come for us to be accompanied by a mayor who is elected by the people and can be replaced," she added. "Let's rise up, Kuala Lumpur."
