PAS 'not serious' in resolving Kuin 5 suspension issue

PAS is not serious about defending the five suspended Kolej Universiti Insaniah (Kuin) students since several closed-door meetings have failed to yield results, says the student group Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM).

PAS is not serious about defending the five suspended Kolej Universiti Insaniah (Kuin) students since several closed-door meetings have failed to yield results, says the student group Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM).
SMM president Ahmad Syukri Abdul Razab (left) said they had sent a memorandum urging PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to intervene in the matter on May last year, before the decision to suspend the students was made.
“However, we don’t see any serious action from PAS, especially from PAS Youth to advise Kedah Menteri Besar (Azizan Abdul Razak) on the 'Kuin 5' issue, aside from several closed-door meetings that did not bear fruit.
“In fact, the Kedah menteri besar defends the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) to this day,” Ahmad Syukri said in a statement today.
He was responding to Abdul Hadi’s statement yesterday that he has not received the students’ memorandum.
“If it is possible, I want to see the memorandum too and find out what the students have to say on the issue,” he was quoted saying.
In view of this, Ahmad Shukri said the students would arrange for a meeting with the president to find a solution for the matter.
The students at the Kedah state-owned institution were suspended in June last year under Act 555 and Act 174 - laws similar to the UUCA but tailored for private higher learning institutions - after they protested the takeover of a building which houses their hostel and prayer hall, to be converted into a school.
SMM had handed the memorandum, which, among others, urges Abdul Hadi to advise the menteri besar not to enforce UUCA. It was received by then PAS Youth deputy chief Ahmad Sabki Yusof.
