Why ban members from Himpun, DPM asks PAS

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today called on PAS to explain the allegation by Hasan Ali that the party had prohibited its members from attending the Himpun gathering organised with the aim of preserving the faith of Muslims.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today called on PAS to explain the allegation by Hasan Ali that the party had prohibited its members from attending the Himpun gathering organised with the aim of preserving the faith of Muslims.
Muhyiddin said the PAS leadership should explain the allegation made by the former Selangor PAS commissioner so that the people would know the truth and can decide for themselves.
"Faith is a very important issue in Islam, but if a former leader of PAS dares to say that many members of the party are no longer driven by the same faith, then Muslims in the country should make an assessment of that situation.
"It's a serious allegation and PAS should come forward to deny it. Hasan is a very knowledgeable man and there must be a strong reason why he said that.
"If PAS doesn't agree, PAS should refute it," Muhyiddin (right) told reporters after presenting the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) to recipients in Bukit Pasir, Pagoh.
Yesterday, Hasan hit out at PAS leaders, describing them as parasites who have caused the party to deviate from its Islamic faith, for not supporting the gathering to preserve the faith of Muslims.
He said it was illogical for the party which had been defending Islam to make such a decision.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Pagoh MP, said any development pertaining to the issue was watched by the Barisan Nasional leadership and the people as a whole.
"What is PAS's goal? Is PAS really an Islamic party or just superficial in character?
"These questions must be given serious thought by both Muslims and non-Muslims in the country," he added.
Detailed analyses to screen candidates
Meanwhile, the deputy prime minister advised BN leaders at all levels to make an in-depth analysis of the candidates the coalition can field in their constituencies in the next general election.
He said choosing the right candidate is a vital factor in the 13th general election.
"While the voters will judge the contesting parties in terms of their struggle, philosophy, ideology and vision, the candidates will be an important factor," he told reporters.
He said the BN leaders should analyse a candidate in terms of leadership, background and public acceptance.
The BN is still identifying the potential candidates, with each of the component parties making the evaluation themselves, he said.
Muhyiddin said BN chairperson and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has not yet asked the component parties to submit the list of their candidates.
Asked whether there will be any exchange of seats by the component parties in the next general election, the Umno deputy president said such a need would be discussed by looking into the pros and cons of the switch.
On a newspaper report that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang may not contest in the next general election, Muhyiddin said the BN is focused more on the coalition's election strategy than on opposition candidates.
