Inquest into Bersih 2.0 death begins tomorrow

An inquest into the cause of death of 59-year-old taxi driver Baharudin Ahmad who died at the Bersih 2.0 rally last year, will commence tomorrow.
An inquest into the cause of death of 59-year-old taxi driver Baharudin Ahmad who died at the Bersih 2.0 rally last year, will commence tomorrow.
When contacted, the lawyer representing Baharudin's family Ahmad Jufliz Faiza, said a total of 30 witnesses were expected to be called throughout the inquest.
"But it's the first day so we are not sure who are these witnesses and who exactly will be called," he said.
According to police, Baharudin (left) who was among the thousands of protestors in the July 9 rally, had suffered a heart attack at the Avenue K shopping complex, 300m from KLCC and was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
However, Baharudin's family disputes their version and suspects foul play.
"We want to ascertain the death because there are some questionable issues.
"After his death on July 9, the next day the police said he died of a heart attack but the death certificate that the family received said (the cause of death) was still pending the laboratory report.
"So it's quite difficult for the family to comprehend why the police and doctors made contradictory statements," he said.
'Family wants closure'
He added that even if Baharudin had died of a heart attack, the family would like closure over the circumstances which caused it.
In August last year, Baharudin's wife Rosni Malan submitted a motion in the KL High Court to direct a magistrate to hold an inquest into her husband's cause of death.
Subsequently, KL High Court Justice Su Geok Yiam struck out the motion, ruling that it was an abuse of the court process.
However, the Attorney-General Chambers in November last year, filed an application for the inquest under Section 399 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The inquest will run from Jan 30-31 while Feb 2-3 and Feb 8-10 have been penciled in for further proceedings.
