Kedah MB willing to be sacked over UUCA

Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak has said that he is prepared to be sacked for defending the use of the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) by the state-owned Kolej Universiti Insaniah (Kuin) against five students.

"I am not afraid. Ask those who criticise me to learn the law first," he said in a Berita Minggu report today.
According to the report, Azizan who is the chairperson of institution's board of directors described calls for him to step down by Pakatan leaders as "shallow".
"Those who criticise do not understand that the UUCA is still in force and Kuin, as a university, is subject to the rules of the Higher Education Ministry, and the rules include enforcing the act," he was quoted as saying.
'Buku Jingga not Quran'
The Kedah PAS commissioner added that Pakatan's pledge to abolish the UUCA in its Buku Jingga manifesto is not the Quran and therefore does not need to be followed entirely.
PAS central working committee member Hanipa Maidin (left), who is representing the five students in challenging the action against them, had on Thursday launched a scathing attack against Azizan.
"Anybody who supports UUCA is not fit to be in Pakatan.
"If he holds any position in any party in Pakatan, he should graciously resign.
"When the general election is just around the corner, Pakatan cannot afford to retain such a person.
"As far as Pakatan leadership is concerned, you are either an asset or a liability," he said in a blog posting.
The five students were suspended in June last year under Act 555 and Act 174, laws similar to the UUCA but tailored for private higher learning institutions, after they protested the takeover of a building which houses their hostel and prayer room, to be converted into a school.
