Fair reporting - an idea whose time has come

Kim Quek: The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) must be applauded for this ‘fair reporting pledge' initiative, more so when it was approved with unanimity by its executive council.

It shows up the good conscience of these people to help bring about fairer election through fairer media coverage at this critical time when an election is imminent. Let us give them our full support and encouragement.

Swkdayaks: Pakatan Rakyat, please take note and put all Bob Teoh's proposals in your election manifesto. We really need a free press to provide checks and balances.

I hope our media/press people are watching the current debates in the United States between the Republican presidential candidates, which are being telecast live by CNN and CBS.

Why can't our media/press people advocate or facilitate such a public debate between Najib Razak representing the BN and Anwar Ibrahim representing Pakatan before polling day in the coming 13th general election.

That would surely help voters to assess/judge these two leaders and their policies.

Unlike now, when every day our media, newspapers and TVs only give Najib and his Umno leaders coverage which is very boring to watch and makes one feels like a fool listening to their speeches that insult one's intelligence.

Blind Freddo: I read that Anwar has challenged Najib to a public debate on the economy.

I can't help but wonder why he would want to do that? Is it his 'clever' way of getting equal television time?

If that's the case then you will fail because such a debate would have awful ratings as on the whole Malaysians will not understand, nor will they be interested. The other negative effect of such a debate is that you will allow yourself to be dragged down to Najib's level.

Anwar, Pakatan is at the doorway of a new, honest and dynamic Malaysia. But instead of striding through with the confidence, you are fumbling with the keys of indecision and constantly looking over your shoulder to see what Umno and the Islamists are doing to hold you back.

You might gain a few Anything But Umno (ABU) votes, but you have failed to inspire and excite Malaysia about the future. And in the process, you will give Malaysia back to Umno for another 10 years.

Sarawakian_3ff9: Don't bank on it. As long as the newspapers are owned by political parties, you can bet your last ringgit that journalists will do more to please their political masters than to tell the truth.

We all can thank the Almighty for the Internet, otherwise we will be swallowing the BN lies one after another.

Landmark gender equality judgment faces appeal

Swkdayaks: Pakatan, please support this poor unfortunate unfairly discriminated Norfadilla Ahmad Saikin from the BN government's blatant injustice against one of our fellow Malaysians. Set up a legal fund for her and her family.

Sabardin Abd Malik: Don't ask the education minister anything now. He (Muhyiddin Yassin) is out looking for a cow (attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail) that lost its way to the kandang lembu, National Feedlot Corporation (NFC). It will be a gross injustice if the appeal is allowed.

Mr KJ John: If there is an appeal by the AG, the minister for women affairs (Shahrizat Abdul Jalil) must resign over this matter alone.

Mahindar Singh: We have millions of foreigners working in this country and here we are fighting over the rights of a Malaysian.

This is totally unacceptable. It is so obvious this government has lost touch with the people. What a shame.

Don't repeat Kedah MB's mistake, Pakatan warned

Swkdayaks: Pakatan cannot afford to have such a leader acting blatantly contrary to the opposition coalition's stand, policies and agenda, especially when the election is around the corner.

What would the voters think of such contradiction, inconsistency and hypocrisy among its ranks/leaders?

PAS must act quickly on this before it loses voters' support. With utmost respect, Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak doesn't inspire or instill any confidence. Replace him with a young dynamic PAS leader immediately.

Appum: Poor Kedah MB, he looks so frail. Perhaps PAS should look into his physical and mental health as he seems to be unable to take the pressure of office.

Lately, he's been under the spotlight after making some blunders. It would be a kind gesture to let him retire now before the 13th general election. I think he needs all the rest he can get.
