15 deaths on ninth day of Ops Sikap

Fifteen deaths were recorded on the ninth day of the 25th Ops Sikap yesterday, raising the overall number of fatalities to 108 since its launch on Jan 16.

The police website today reported that seven of those killed were motorcyclists, followed by seven motorists and a pedestrian.
A total of 890 accidents were reported, with the highest number of 321 on municipal roads followed by federal roads at 240, state roads (146), highways (114) and 69 on other roads.
Police also issued 19,031 summonses for various traffic offences yesterday, making it 157,605 so far, during the nine days.
The 25th Ops Sikap ends on Jan 30 and was launched for the Chinese New Year. Police have taken the approach of issuing immediate summonses to traffic offenders to educate road users to be more careful, in efforts to reduce fatalities during the festive season.
