PAS Youth has reiterated its opposition to the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) and called on the Kedah menteri besar to resolve the suspension of five Kolej Universiti Insaniah (KUIN) student leaders.

"Our stand never changed and it is clear. Indeed, I had said the same to MB Azizan Abdul Razak himself and had asked KUIN to act appropriately and not suspend the five students," its chief Nasruddin Hassan said in a statement yesterday.

pas muktamar 130610 nasruddin hassan 1 "Our stand should never be on a specific case alone or that involving a specific university or college, but it should encapsulate all, including KUIN, which is under the Kedah state, administered by Pakatan Rakyat for which the MB is from PAS."

Other than speaking to the MB, Nasruddin said that he had also spoken to the KUIN administration to urge them to reconsider their earlier decision.

However, since the matter has since been taken to the courts by the five individuals concerned, Nasruddin said that it is now up to the courts to settle the matter.

Nasruddin's statement came in the wake of mounting pressure on Azizan to intervene in the matter and halt the suspensions being meted out to the students using the UUCA, as ironically, PAS and Pakatan are staunch opponents of the act which they claim to be repressive.

Three days ago, a group of students protested PAS' inaction over the KUIN suspensions in front of the Islamic party's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

It was reported that the five students were suspended by the college administration for participating in an "illegal" assembly.

The students staged a rally last April calling on their college management to reconsider its decision to use one of its residential college buildings as classrooms for Quran studies students.

Action was subsequently taken against the five because they spoke to the media about their plight, which violated UUCA provisions.
