Ipoh Timor parliamentarian Lim Kit Siang today called Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s bluff by pushing the latter to apologise to Bersih 2.0 chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.

In a statement, Lim said that failure to apologise for endorsing “intimidating” statements made against Ambiga in the lead up to the July 7 rally would negate the PM’s calls to “make the voice of moderation louder”.

najib abdul razak“Is Najib (left) prepared to publicly apologise to Ambiga and Bersih 2.0 for those extremists actions to demonstrate his seriousness in calling for moderates to unite against all forms of extremism whether in Malaysia or outside?” he asked.

Responding to the PM’s call at the international conference on the Global Movement of Moderates on Tuesday, Lim said that this starkly contrasts with lack of action on Ambiga and Bersih 2.0's detractors.

Testifying at a Suhakam inquiry into the Bersih 2.0 rally yesterday, Ambiga said the PM had “endorsed” such intimidation.

“The mainstream media blatantly accused Bersih 2.0 of being a front for Christian, Jewish and foreign groups. Up to now, no action had been taken against these criminal intimidation against Ambiga and Bersih 2.0,” Lim said.

The DAP parliamentary leader added that another test for the PM is for him to reform Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia from being the “voice of enmity, malice, unreason and extremism” into a “voice of reason and moderation”.

“If Najib is not prepared to (do so) then Malaysians are entitled to ask what is the real purpose of the international conference on Global Movement of Moderates which would have cost the government a fortune to host,” he said.
