Hishammuddin: People willing to wait for reforms

your say YF: Most Malaysians are willing to wait for reforms? Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, when you said ‘most', did you mean the minority crooks in Umno or the majority rakyat who supports Bersih?

You seem to have lost touch of the rakyat sentiments hence it is a clear sign that Umno no longer represents the rakyat and that they should be voted out.

Malaysian Born: Hisham, why the need to refer to violence and bloodshed and where is the basis to compare Malaysia with Japan's post-war transition?

If anything has been proven, it is that the Malaysian people are mature and peaceful, capable of assembling and protesting peacefully when they want change.

Further, it has been shown clearly that the Malaysian people are intelligent enough not to be manipulated into reacting with violence despite concerted efforts of instigation and provocation.

Disbeliever: Mr Home Minister, you are just making an assumption that most Malaysians are willing to wait for the government to implement reforms.

The way I see it, the government, including the judiciary, are dragging their feet over a lot of things. Just look at the 'Allah' issue where the High Court had ruled in favour of Catholic weekly The Herald . That was in 2009 and it's now 2012, and yet the courts are putting this issue in cold storage.

Don't tell me that the Home Ministry has no hand in this. Please Mr Home Minister, don't take the rakyat for idiots. That's precisely what you are doing and that makes you the biggest idiot of them all because we shall punish you and Umno-BN at the ballot box.

Swipenter: We have given Umno-BN 54 years to reform. Instead of reforming, Umno-BN refined the divide-and-rule policies/strategies to a fine art. You squander and plunder the riches of country for yourselves and your cronies. Enough is enough.

Onyourtoes: How much more time do you need and how much more patience must the people grant you? Another 50 years?

The country in transition will not cause bloodshed unless there are reactionary forces trying to derail and stop it. What leadership have we seen to pave the way for greater freedom and inclusiveness the last 50 years?

Have we made progress or retrogress? If Pakatan Rakyat has not made inroad in 2008, is our leadership today even talking about transformation and transition?

Fifty-two years since the ending of the first Emergency in 1960 and 23 years since the signing of the Peace Treaty with CPM, is it still not long enough for the government to restore civil liberties in the country?

Well, the rakyat have given up waiting and come GE13 we intend to vote for a government that will fully and comprehensively restore our rights under the federal constitution, respect the rule of law, free the press and carry out fundamental reforms in the police force, the electoral laws, state institutions and the way we are governed.

We cannot wait for another 55 years for Umno-BN to embrace change and reform in a calculated, guarded and self-preserving manner.

Malaysia is not Japan that was feudal in nature and totally destroyed in World War Two and yet they have become an open, liberal and thriving democracy since 1945.

The process was not restrained and piecemeal as Umno wants to suggest. Stop bargaining with our rights. Politicians are there to serve us.

Toffeesturn: Coming from a man who told brazen lies in the aftermath of Bersih 2.0's police brutality, and who represents a government which the people have lost faith and is close to collapse, we can't wait.

The waiting is nothing but a ploy to carry you to the next general elections and we are not as foolish as you think we are. I think you better drop the ‘Hussein' in your name - that name represented integrity and you can't, and do not, live up to this.

Unspin: If Umno-BN were to do an objective post-mortem as to why a lot of non-Malays decided to vote opposition in the last GE, one of the key tipping points was Hishammuddin's raised ‘keris' at the 2007 Umno Youth assembly.

I was told that many people who knew him before are quite disappointed with the fact that a dove can morphed into a hawk for political expediency. His father and grandfather must be turning in their graves to have such a naughty and arrogant offspring.

Muak: Hisham said that "people are willing to wait for reforms." He talks as if he knows what the man-on-the-street thinks.

The people want reforms now. Not later. And it is becoming very clear that Umno-BN is incapable of reforms. The only way is to vote them out of Putrajaya.

Malaysia deserves some fresh faces in Parliament. It's time for some other more capable folks to make the laws.

Sadirah K: Hisham, we have waited 50 years and the situation has gone really bad. That is why Bersih has drawn overwhelming support from the rakyat.

Don't hide your unfairness and injustice under the name of moderation. Why are you afraid of fairness and justice and a level-playing field?

Malaysians have had enough. We shall be part of the Malaysian Spring and you will then learn where real power resides - not in the hands of the politicians, but the people.

What is the use of your legal education when you cannot even appreciate what is obvious. Economic growth and development must lead to a fairer and more equitable democracy.

We now have a stunted democracy and need new institutions to meet the longings of our people.

Ksn: Yes, people are willing to wait for reforms from a ‘new' government. They know that no substantial reforms will come to the country as long as Umno is in power.

So you are right, Hisham, we will wait until then. We have already given up on Umno.
