EC overhaul not necessary, says Muhyiddin

The Election Commission (EC) in its current form has proven effective therefore overhauling it is unnecessary, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
The DPM differed with ex EC chief Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman's call saying that the EC ran elections smoothly.

According to a Bernama report, the DPM said the EC was already an independent body created under Parliament and a parliamentary select comittee (PSC) to improve the existing electoral system has also been set up.
He said this in response to former EC chairperson Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman's call for the EC to be given full powers in conducting elections without having to share it with other agencies.
This, Abdul Rashid had said, would ensure that the EC is truly independent.
Local papers also quoted Abdul Rashid as saying that the government should set up an independent body to ensure general elections could satisfy all parties as the present PSC was not permanent and would become void when Parliament is dissolved.
Muhyiddin (above) said the government was prepared for any suggestions and would consider them, if necessary.
However, the DPM said to date the government did not see any need to set up a special body (as suggested by Abdul Rashid) claiming everything was running properly and the proposal of the PSC had been scrutinised by the EC.
