Former Malacca assembly speaker Amid Nordin passed away at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Melaka Putra Hospital today due to liver cancer.

According to Bernama, the former Telok Mas assemblyperson died about noon after being admitted to the hospital two days ago.

He is survived by two wives and six children.

Amid was the state speaker from 1999 to 2004.

Melaka Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam regarded Amid's death as a big loss for Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN).

Amid was diagnosed with liver cancer in January last year and underwent chemotherapy since two months ago, he told reporters after visiting Amid's family at the hospital.

He said that Amid, who was Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) chairperson, had contributed a lot to the state's business sector.

Amid is best known for defeating former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik in the fight for the Kota Melaka Umno division chief in the late 1990's.
