Thousands flooded Kampung Baru in the capital city last night to listen to opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s ‘final message’ before today’s sodomy trial verdict at Duta Court.
With Anwar were top opposition leaders such as PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, and PKR vice presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tian Chua, PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin and even national poet A Samad Said.
About 5,000 supporters also filled the Sultan Sulaiman club field to listen to the leader.
Those who couldn’t find room at the venue were content crowding along the staircases of neighbouring buildings in order to catch a glimpse of the PKR de facto leader who faces a distinct possibility of imprisonment if the verdict tomorrow is unfavourable.
Many of the supporters are from out of town, who had arrived in Kuala Lumpur since early evening in anticipation of the 901 rally tomorrow at the Duta Court carpark at 7am tomorrow.
The turnout fired up Anwar, who delivered a spirited speech to his rapt audience.
“Tonight we have won, I have been saved. What’s the problem?” he said to a roar of approval from the crowd.
He said his family was worried that should he be jailed, he may be beaten up again as in his jail term for his first sodomy conviction.
“It probably won’t happen again,” said Anwar.
