Former PAS vice-president Hasan Ali has proposed that Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat be made prime minister and its leader, Anwar Ibrahim is convicted for sodomy on Monday.

If age was a factor, the Selangor exco member suggested, then PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang could be the choice, as both are capable candidates in the event that Pakatan Rakyat wins power at the coming general election.

Hasan said factors such as the family background, government and international track records should to be taken into consideration in the selection of leaders.

"We also have to look at their personal environment, especially whether the family is good, the wife and children are good, since leaders are mirrors of society.

"For these reasons, the best person to lead Malaysia and the person whom I best know is Nik Aziz.

"If age is a factor, then Abdul Hadi can," he said.

Hasan also asked why Abdul Hadi could not be taken into consideration just because he was not educated at Oxford or Cambridge.

Hasan said their lifestyles, their families and track records and experience in handling people should be decisive factors.

"If I have the power to make the suggestion, I would name the two as potential prime ministers to lead the country," he said.

Badrul Amin to be summoned

Hasan, who is also the state exco member in charge of Islamic Affairs, also said he has directed the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) to investigate PKR supreme council member Badrul Amin Baharom for likening Anwar to 'Imam Mahdi'.

In Islam, the Mahdi is the prophesied redeemer of Islam who will rule for several years before Judgment Day and will rid the world of injustice.

"I respect Badrul Amin (left) as we are friends and are also fellow Bugis, but the remark is improper."

Hasan also said he was puzzled by Badrul Amin's remarks and that Badrul was different from the person he knew 20 years ago.

"As an educated person who has a PhD in religion, he should know that Islam prohibits us worshipping a person. I heard his speech and read the transcribed version."

"He cited a hadith and he referred to Anwar as Imam Mahdi. I feel it is excessive and he should withdraw it to clear his name and his reputation."

He added that he would direct the Jais director to call Badrul Amin to clarify the matter.

Asked whether he would appear before the PAS disciplinary committee on Sunday to explain the remarks he made that are considered critical of the party, the former PAS commissioner said he had not been summoned.

"I have not been served any letter. I thought my meeting with Nik Aziz in Kota Bharu (on Dec 27) for the mahabbah was sufficient and there is no need for other meetings."

So, Hasan added, “the matter is concluded”.
