The Federation of Peninsula Malay Students (GPMS) today criticised political parties which make use of undergraduates to champion their cause through illegal gatherings and street demonstrations.

GPMS president Jais Abdul Karim said undergraduates should realise that there are political parties which exploit them to convey their hidden agenda.

Undergraduates, who are the future leaders of the country, should exercise maturity and wisdom in handling issues, for example those political in nature, which can destroy their future, he told Bernama when contacted.

Jais said the government provided ample opportunity to undergraduates to express their opinions and dissatisfaction on any issue.

"However, this has to be done in the proper way instead of gathering illegally and disrupting public order," he said, adding that demonstrations and riots will only incite anger among the people.

Jais welcomed the proposal by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to amend the Universities and University Colleges Act to allow greater student freedom but said students must be allowed to give their views on the matter as well.
