'Auntie Bersih', whose real name is Annie Ooi Siew Lan (below), was there in a show of support for some student leaders lodging a police report alleging police brutality when dispersing after a sit-in protest outside Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) Jan 1.
As Federal Territory Wanita Umno chief Azizah Abdul Samad’s entourage arrived at the police station at about 2pm to lodge a report opposing an upcoming rally on PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II verdict day, Ooi lashed out at them over the UPSI incident.
“Why did the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) take up positions? They are kids! They had no rifles and no sticks. The FRU came with their helmets and their shields,” Ooi shouted while walking away.
One Wanita Umno member then interrupted and asked, “Where are you from?” to which Ooi responded with another barrage: “Our society, our nation, our people and this old lady, don’t want anyone getting beaten.”
Another Wanita Umno member interjected: “But who did the beating?”
Ooi refused to answer and told the women’s group to watch videos of the protest incident instead.
“The film is there, I don’t want to waste time arguing with you. Go see the records, records that the whole world can see.
“I don’t want to discuss this any further. We are not at the same level. Sorry,” Ooi said, and continued on her journey.
“There is no point talking to them,” added a woman accompanying Ooi.
According to Bernama, the Wanita Umno members were there along with members of Ikatan Rakyat Malaysia (IRIMM), Dewan Ekonomi dan Sosial Malaysia, and Wangsa Maju MIC to lodge police reports against the planned Jan 9 pro-Anwar rally outside the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
“If the protest takes place, it will adversely affect our economy. We urge the police to take action against the organisers and ensure that the protest does not take place,” IRIMM president Amir Amsaa Alla Pitchay was reported as saying.
