Police have almost completed the investigation paper on a recent illegal gathering involving about 70 university students at the compound of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak police chief Mohd Shukri Dahlan said today.

He said when completed, the paper, prepared with the cooperation of Bukit Aman, would be submitted to the public prosecutor's office for further action.

"The police have recorded statements from several of the students involved, as well as the policemen involved in dispersing the crowd," he told reporters in Ipoh today.

On postings in several blogs and portals which questioned the police action against the students, Mohd Shukri said police were monitoring quarters trying to tarnish the police image.

He said police had a video recording to prove that no force was used to disperse the crowd at the illegal gathering.

"That night we know we are dealing with students, so there was no point to bring weapons or to use force. If there are statements by the students that they were injured by the police, they were false accusations.

"What we know is that the injuries were sustained when they crashed into a clinic, purportedly to get medicine," he added.

In the incident on Dec 31 last year, 17 university students, including a woman, was detained for participating in an unlawful gathering organised by a student group called Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) and Gerakan Menuntut Kebebasan Akademik (Bebas).
