The Dewan Negara today passed five bills related to the welfare of workers in the country.

The five bills included the controversial Employment (Amendments) Bill 2011  which was passed after block voting.

The block voting called by Senator Saiful Izham Ramli saw 36 “ayes” versus eight “nays”.

Among others, the bill will allow for close monitoring of manpower suppliers, especially in rural areas.

Besides this, it will also enable the Human Resources Ministry to maintain a comprehensive record of workers to facilitate easier monitoring.

The other bills passed were the Pensions (Amendments) Bill 2011; Statutory and Local Authorities Pensions (Amendment) Bill 2011; Pensions Adjustment (Amendment) Bill 2011 and Judges' Remuneration (Amendment) (No 2) Bill 2011.
