Thailand will host a three-nation meeting on rubber prices next month, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said today after talks with Malaysia's Primary Industries Minister Lim Keng Yaik.

Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, the world's top three rubber producers, will meet to discuss how they can work together if the price falls below US$1 per kilogram, Thaksin told reporters.

"The current price is fine, we don't have to do anything but we will hold a meeting between the three nations as a preparation for when the price goes down," he said.

"The meeting in February will discuss the possibility of us agreeing on a position to not sell rubber once it falls below a certain rate," he said, adding that the price should stay between US$1 and US$1.5.

Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia established the International Tripartite Rubber Corporation (ITRC) in October 2003, which aims to facilitate collaborative efforts to sell natural rubber in the global market.

Thailand is the world's largest natural rubber producer, followed by Indonesia and Malaysia. - AFP
