PAS prohibits three elements in requiring bai'ah

Tuan Ibrahim (left) said the religious pledge is mainly to prevent its winning candidates from jumping ship.
“First, the candidate will have to pledge that the person will not leave the party. Secondly, if they leave the party, they must vacate the seat as they had betrayed the voters and people’s trust in them.
“Finally, if they leave and do not vacate their seat, their income including the allowances and pensions which the person receives is considered haram,” Tuan Ibrahim was quoted as saying in the Sinar Harian daily.
Tuan Ibrahim was explaining PAS’ bai’ah compared to Umno’s pledge, where he said the nationalist party’s pledge is towards the selection and support of the candidate and not done on the principles of trustworthiness.
In the recently-concluded Umno assembly on Saturday, the party’s bai’ah pledge was led by its deputy president, Muhyiddin Yassin.
Meanwhile, the New Straits Times has reported that several Independent MPs which comprise the Konsensus Bebas (Independent Caucus) have agreed to make way and not defend their seats.
Quoting Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Mohamad Hashim (right), some Independent MP may not seek re-election as this was discussed in a meeting with several Independent Caucus MPs. He, however, did not want to disclose who they are nor those who are willing to defend their seats.
The Independent Caucus comprise of five other MPs besides Zahrain, namely N Gobalakrishnan (Padang Serai), Tan Tee Beng (Nibong Tebal), Zulkifli Nordin (Kulim Bandar Baru), Mohsin Fadzul Samsuri (Bagan Serai) and Wee Choo Keong (Wangsa Maju). They are previously from PKR.
Ibrahim Ali (Independent-Pasir Mas) is not a member of the caucus.
