Umno members alone won't guarantee GE victory

Umno members should not be over-confident in winning the general election following the party's success in registering 3.4 million members so far.
Umno information head Ahmad Maslan said this was because the large membership could not guarantee victory for the Barisan Nasional in the next general election.
"(This is because) Umno members represented only one-quarter of the total of 12 million voters," he told reporters after opening the 7th Malay agenda seminar organised by the Overseas Umno Club Alumni in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said currently about three million Umno members were registered voters.
As such, he said all Umno members must work hard to gain the support of other voters, especially those 'fence sitters'.
"...we have to get closer to the other voters too and get them to support Umno and the BN," he added.
Meanwhile, in a bid to reach out to the younger generation, the 2011 Umno general assembly held at the Putra World Trade Centre
today saw the introduction of a leisure programme known as 'Vokal-X'.
The one-day programme offers a platform for the young people to show off their talents such as playing musical instruments, reciting poems and singing, Ahmad said when opening the programme.
During the event, Ahmad also delivered a poem written by national laureate Usman Awang entitled 'Melayu' and a pantun on the struggles of the Malays.
'Vokal-X' organising chairman Razie Nasarruddin said the programme would inadvertently show that Umno had always supported and provided a platform for the younger generation to participate in the assembly, even by taking a different approach.
The programme also featured local rock band 'Jinbara' and a teenage group known as "Trickelaysia" who performed a dance performance with elements of martial arts and gymnastics.
