PKR 'introduces' potential candidates at congress

The emergence of many young leaders on the PKR national congress stage in Johor today raises speculation that these new faces will be fielded as candidates in the next general election.

Young talent with potential revealed themselves through debates, ‘coincidentally’ calling for more space for young voices.
Among them was Negri Sembilan youth chief Mohd Nazree Mohd Yunus (left) who delivered an energetic speech while debating the motion to strengthen the party’s appeal to young voters.
Mohd Nazree, a member since 2009, pointed out the gains the party can make if they can take advantage of young minda.
“Our party has experienced members who have been with the movement since 1998, reformasi times.
“But we must remember that there is a new group of university graduates, almost 1.5 million of them,” he said, proposing the adoption of the slogan “respect the old and love the young” to balance the influence and roles of the two groups in the 12-year-old party.
PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, however had a different view.
When met by Malaysiakini and asked if the debates this year were used as a platform to showcase potential candidates among youth members, Shamsul (right) said that this probably appeared to be so as “the congress is held during election season”.
“It’s not exactly the case (that we are showcasing potential candidates but) it is true that our challenge at every congress is to showcase new cadres.
“We give space for those who have been active in the party to debate an issue in front of an audience... I wouldn’t have a problem if debaters are fielded as candidates,” he said.
Target of 30 percent candidates from the youth
He was also glad that almost 50 percent of the debaters were youth members, and that the youth wing’s target that 30 percent of candidates fielded are among the youth.
PKR Youth membership is for those aged 35 and under.
Also attracting attention today was Terengganu PKR Youth delegate Alfaizal Ajmed and Kelantan delegate Muhammad Hisommuddin, who debated on young voters and the civil service respectively.
A special session called the People’s Debate where speakers were invited from different segments of society to speak on issues affecting the rakyat also showcased commendable speakers.
Lawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, who kicked off the session, spoke of a fair and just society was echoed by another prominent youth member Lee Khai Loon, who called for progressive “big tent politics”.
Young leaders expected to stand a chance to be electoral candidates and lined up to debate tomorrow are PKR Youth members P Saravanan and Azmizam Zaman Huri.
The congress ends tomorrow.
