Umno needs a formidable line-up to counter accusations hurled against the government which are getting widespread coverage in the alternative media, said Association of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) president Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman.

He said Umno needs to take this step because the party was seen to be slow in responding to the accusations.

Umno's weakness in cyberwarfare had cause various issues to be twisted by irresponsible quarters on the Internet, he said.

"Umno's cyberwarfare now is not very effective, it has to re-strategise by setting up a formidable frontline of cybertroopers who are able counter the lies spread against the government," he said.

He told this to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony for the presentation of a leadership excellence award to Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang organised by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry and Mubarak in Kuantan today.

He said at the same time, the authorities should also take appropriate action on those making baseless accusations and slandering the government in the alternative media.

Mubarak lobbies Najib

Abdul Aziz also said Mubarak had made it views known to Najib Razak and that the prime minister had been receptive to them including the fielding Umno veterans and former elected representatives as candidates in the upcoming 13th general election.

"But that (standing in elections) is not our main priority as we want to serve the people voluntarily.

"Mubarak is just a non-governmental organisation aimed at complementing the current leadership, not a political party," he said.

Abdul Aziz also called on the grassroots to join Najib and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in undertaking transformation initiatives for the well-being of the people.

"Everyone has to be involved, only than the objectives will be met," he said.
