Are we stupid enough to fall for the same scam?

your sayQuigonbond: PM Najib Razak proudly declared in Parliament today that the Peaceful Assembly Bill is revolutionary. Well, it will indeed be a catalyst for a revolution.

Never have I seen such a brazen spin on what is essentially a piece of repressive thrash sugarcoated as liberating.

The bottom line is, the police and the minister has more power, and the government wants to make more money out of passionate protestors (with the drastic increase in fines).

It is highly disturbing because Malaysians no longer expect the minister or his police to act impartially and professionally.

The bill is wicked, won't work to promote democratic space, and Malaysians have every right to feel indignant and to reject it in its current form.

Onyourtoes: Contrary to what is said here, those who are supportive of BN are not stupid, neither are they brainwashed into morons.

Perhaps some are ignorant and unaware but many, such as BN MPs, ministers and deputy ministers, corporate tycoons, those working in government-linked companies, mainstream newspapers owners and editors, government servants, ketua kampung, Rela and Kemas people are not stupid.

They are in fact beneficiaries of BN's largesse and patronage. They will continue supporting BN even though they know in their hearts BN is crap.

Ever noticed that those who speak up against the ills of the country are ex-ministers, MPs, state assemblymen, retired government servants and out-of-favour businessmen? We must be stupid if we think this is mere coincidence.

Abasir: The answer to the headlined question is ‘yes, we are stupid'.

When we have a substantial portion of unthinking, semi-literate, simplistic, 'led-by-the-nose' and easily corruptible/titillated citizenry constantly mesmerised by titles, false prophets and feudal lords, the scams will continue and the crooked will continue to thrive.

This is a country that is destined for failure and all the signs of decline are there.

Peaceful Assembly Bill ignites protest at Parliament

Mirror On The Wall: The part that is pertinent is Section 27 that gives the police arbitrary and discretionary powers - "only if the police give consent". It's the same law couched in different language.

It is quite clear that nothing has changed - just a couple words that can be twisted for the benefit of the ruling regime. With this word change, they hope that the people will be hoodwinked yet again.

Many will be. But most will not.

Loyal Malaysian: "Despite strong opposition, the bill's proponents insist that Malaysians are not prepared for unbridled freedom and such a right would spell disaster for a multiracial country."

The civil society is not demanding unbridled freedom. The rakyat is demanding that Najib walks his talk, stop lying to the rakyat.

Bersih 2.0 leader Ambiga Sreenevasan has informed us that certain provisions in the new bill is actually unconstitutional and is curtailing our civil liberties further.

Human Being: We are all ready for the next Bersih. Just tell us where and when. Can we wear multi-coloured T-shirts instead of yellow this time? The police cannot ban all colours.

Jedi_Who: It's more like Umno is not prepared to defend Putrajaya by democratic means, but rather to hold on to power by draconian means.

Anonymous_4031: Do not for one moment believe what the government leaders say about freedom of peaceful assembly - there is no freedom at all.

While some Malaysians are lulled into believing that at long last freedom of assembly was at hand, this bill will tie the hands of peaceful protestors further.

Though no police permit is required, a 30-day notice should be given to the police, and the police could easily say that the assembly would cause disturbance and hence such an assembly could not be held.

So, this is worse than before. Note also the other restrictions - a buffer zone of 50 metres between the protest site and a petrol station, church, mosque, temple, school, etc, will make most sites unsuitable for an assembly.

Pity Him: Is it not apparent they will push this bill through before the kill (13GE) and put opposition leaders into jail at the slightest infringement?

Of course, many Malaysians will suffer the same fate. Najib is very clever indeed. But let's see how this evil plan pans out.

Full Of Crap: MCA, Gerakan, MIC and BN component parties, what are you doing about this? Still want to sell out more of the rights of Malaysians?

It is time these leaders stop this disgusting bill. If you do not support this bill, what can Umno do?
