Kuantan residents seek dialogue with Mustapa

On behalf of Kuantan residents, Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh is seeking a dialogue with International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed over the controversial Lynas Advanced Material Plant (Lamp) when the ministry visits the rare earth plant on Nov 30.
On behalf of Kuantan residents, Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh is seeking a dialogue with International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed over the controversial Lynas Advanced Material Plant (Lamp) when the ministry visits the rare earth plant on Nov 30.
“It is truly the wish of the Kuantan public to continue to engage in two-way communication with the various agencies involved in regulating Lamp,” said Fuziah in a statement today.
“After receiving various feedback from the public, I have taken the initiative to take the lead in organising a dialogue with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in conjunction with their visit to Kuantan on Nov 30, 2011.”
The PKR MP has today written an official letter to Mustapa inviting him to the dialogue.
“Many Kuantan residents have stated their concern and objections against the rare earth plant. They feel that the federal and state governments have gone against their views and fears in making the decision to allow the construction of the plant to be continued,” read the letter.
She claimed that so far no concrete solution has been put in place by Lynas to deal with the solid waste which contains radioactive elements.
Fuziah (left) added that the residents will arrange a venue for the dialogue if Mustapa agrees to meet them.
Mustapa is given until this Sunday to reply to the invitation.
Several anti-Lynas groups are currently beefing up their efforts to protest against the Australian mining giant because the company is aggressively lobbying for the plant’s operating licence to enable it to start operations by the end of this year.
On the same day of Mustapa’s scheduled visit to the plant, the Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL) group will be protesting in Sydney outside the venue of Lynas’ annual general meeting, its second such protest in Australia.
It had visited the land down under on a six-day trip beginning on July 5 this year, where the group members picketed at Lynas’ headquarters, held forums and lobbied Australian lawmakers.
