Satellite television operator Astro today said its operations became profitable in the October quarter for the first time since its inception in 1996, boosted by its listing two months ago.

The group recorded revenue of RM373.60 million and profit after tax of RM5.7 million in the October quarter, putting it on track for strong performance in the full year, it said in a statement.

Subscriber growth was strong, with nearly 84,400 new additions during the quarter to take the total subscriber base to 1.19 million, representing a 25 percent penetration of Malaysian television households, it said.

Astro said its balance sheet has been strengthened by improved profitability and the proceeds raised from its initial public offering in October. As at October 31, its net cash position stood at 453 million ringgit.

"We have had a successful third quarter and I am confident we are on track for a strong year barring any unforeseen circumstances," said its chairman Badri Masri.

Astro has target its subscriber base to hit 1.80 million by the end of 2005.- AFP
