Its chairperson, Dr Mohamad Salleh Ismail said although many people could not see the big picture, the national food security was a real aspect of NFC operations.
“Food security is a serious issue. And, without it we will be suffer untold harm. We will not know if Malaysia will be imposed with sanctions, we might encounter food supply problems,” he said at a media briefing in Gemas yesterday.
He said statistics from the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry showed that Malaysia produced only 29 percent of its beef consumption in 2010 while the rest was imported from India, Australia, Uruguay, New Zealand and the United States.
In striving provide quality beef, he said NFC produced mature cows weighing 600kg compared to cows from Kedah and Kelantan that weighed only 300kg.
Mohamad Salleh said the Wagyu cattle breeds produced by NFC were priced between RM4,500 and RM5,000 per head while the cows were slaughtered when they weighed 600kg and provided between 280kg and 300kg of beef.
“For the beef market, the meat will be cut according to choice portions, namely tenderloin, sirloin or rib eye by experts as failure to properly cut them will cause beef prices to drop,” he said.
He said NFC has 150 clients and 46 percent its beef is sold to wet markets, 22 percent (processing sector), 20 percent (hypermarkets) and the rest to hotels, restaurants and catering outlets.
He said the company would explore opportunities in downstream activities such as frozen food and cow hides to help improve the socio-economic condition of the people in the vicinity of its farm in Gemas.
