Defence counsel Gurbachan Singh told the Court of Appeal today that the judgement by High Court judge Augustine Paul in the sacked deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim's corruption trial was "most unsatisfactory and based on wrong finding of facts".

"The judgement is contaminated by a patent wrong finding of facts, by misreading and misappreciation of evidence," said Gurbachan.

Gurbachan also told the court that Paul treated the defence witnesses differently from prosecution witnesses and said that the judge never directed his mind to material contradiction in the evidence of prosecution witnesses.

"His lordship makes mountains out of molehills of the minor inconsistency by defence witnesses while he completely ignored the material contradiction in the evidence of prosecution witnesses," he said.

Gurbachan added that the Paul judgement on the case "ought not to stand".

Gurbachan is representing sacked deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim in his appeal against his corruption conviction and six-year jail sentence.

On April 14 last year, Justice Paul found Anwar guilty of interfering in police probes into allegations of sexual misconduct made against him by former driver Azizan Abu Bakar and Ummi Hafilda Ali, sister of Anwar's former political secretary.

Paul's judgement against Anwar had resulted in massive street protests in Kuala Lumpur by pro-reformasi supporters.

The appeal, which is being heard by Court of Appeal President Lamin Yunus and two other judges, Ahmad Fairuz and Mokhtar Sidin, began on Monday.
