MCA against M'sians abroad being allowed to vote

your say Quigonbond: First, I wonder why Malaysians abroad will be less informed than the local ones. All mainstream media have their Internet versions.

If Malaysians abroad choose not to read that information, even if they are in Malaysia they still won't read it, so it does not matter where they are.

If MCA is referring to their inability to extend their influence to Malaysians abroad either through political persuasion, or through repressive laws, that's really their problem.

The fact is the federal constitution provides for all Malaysians the right to vote, and what MCA says is simply unconstitutional.

Second, I'm surprised how automatic registration of voters will be regarded as wasteful. It's all computerised, and it beats having to go through another process of getting registered as a voter.

The only thing left to do when one reaches 21 is to check where to vote by going to Election Commission's website. MCA might as well own up and say it's afraid of overseas voters.

Disgusted: It is clear that MCA is scared of educated well-informed people overseas who can see a broader picture of what is happening in this country and will vote without fear or favour according to their conscience.

Why only full-time students and civil servants on duty abroad are given the privilege of voting via embassies. Even then there have been umpteen complaints of students in private universities and colleges being denied and told by embassy staff that only government scholarship and other GLC (government-linked company) scholarship students are allowed to vote.

It's ridiculous to say that the Malaysian consulate-general office must prepare 222 parliamentary ballot boxes and 505 state assembly boxes? All the person has to do is to go by the address in the persons IC or passport and the constituency of that address to vote and the votes are allocated by EC accordingly.

This is a stupid excuse by MCA.

Leon Chan: MCA is the one which is out of touch. Our constitution clearly states that if you are a Malaysian, you are automatically an eligible voter upon registration with the authority. Period. No questions asked.

If you think Malaysians staying overseas are out of touch, that is just your opinion. So what if I'm staying in Malaysia and don't read a single news article for years, does that disqualify me from casting my vote?

Anonymous_3e4b: MCA really shows that they are now irrelevant. Malaysians overseas are Malaysians and they have every right to vote.

If you want all Malaysians to be well-informed before going to the polls, then the mainstream media should allow all political parties to state their views. Likewise, all parties newspapers should be given the permit to sell to non-members.

This way the parties contesting the elections will be able to keep voters well-informed of everything that is happening under the Malaysian sun.

Multi Racial: Maybe in the past when Internet was not around, MCA may have had a point. To object now based on the excuses given is just undemocratic.

I've been living in Malaysia from birth until now and I am still relying on the Internet and friends to get reliable information.

Living in Malaysia has not been an advantage as far as information is concerned as the local media are just stories tellers for their BN political masters and there is no credibility to their news.

I have stopped reading local newspapers and watch local TV for a long time. I only tune to BFM (89.9 FM) for local business news. The rest I get from Bloomberg and CNBC. Am I considered out of touch or is MCA out of touch?

Onyourtoes: If overseas voters are not allowed to vote, the reason has to be more than the fact that they are not given correct information about this country.

I think overseas Malaysians are better informed those within the country, given the moronic MSM (mainstream media) hammering away daily with fake news.

But I have one concern which I hope Pakatan Rakyat will take note. Logistically, who shall be in control of these ‘overseas votes'? What are the possibility of manipulation along the way. Don't ask for things unless you know how to handle them.

Fencesitter: What has happened to MCA? Their powerful CC (central committee) member Ei Kim Hock is talking without using his brain. We will not be surprised if he recommends to EC that:

1) The poor are not eligible to vote for the simple reason they can't put food on the table to feed their family, as such they are deemed to have no knowledge of current affairs.

2) The deaf and blind cannot vote as they cannot see and hear.

3) But all foreign workers are granted voting rights because they truly understand the situation in Malaysia.

Anomnim: It never cease to amaze me that everyone in BN seems to try to outdo one another in embarrassing themselves.

CKL: If Malaysians abroad are out of touch with the affairs of the country, and therefore cannot vote, are Malaysians in the country any better?

With the rubbish being printed in the mainstream media controlled by BN parties, what passes for news and analysis is nothing but propaganda.

This is why increasing numbers of Malaysians are turning to the alternative media, which is what Malaysians  abroad are reading.
