Umno activist, three others killed in accident

Four people including a teacher and two students were killed when a sand-laden trailer rammed into the bus they travelling in which had earlier skidded and overturned at Km 382 of the North-South Expressway near Behrang, early today.

Three others were seriously injured in the 4.30am incident. The dead were identified as Siti Hajar Mohamad, 33, Khairul Anwar Azhan, 15, and Maysarra Zaidi, 15. They were all from SMK Air Merah, Kulim, Kedah.
The fourth victim was identified as Basarah Saad, 45, the Alor Teja Wanita Umno branch chief.
Siti Hajar died in hospital while the other three died on the spot.
Those seriously injured are Rosilawati Mat Rifim, 40, a teacher, her son Idzmi Haikal Khairul Shah, 5, and a student, Abdul Rahman Danial Abdul Ghani, 15.
They have been transferred from Slim River hospital to Teluk Intan hospital.

Lumpur, went out of control and overturned to the left before it was hit by the trailer.
Also injured but reported to be in stable condition are teacher Azria Hani, 31, and three students: Mohd Azim Dahlan, 15, Mohd Faizal Anuar, 15, and Mohammad Sariffuddin, 15.
They are currently being treated at the Slim River hospital.
Basarah was a passenger from another bus which had pulled over to provide help to the students, he told reporters at the Slim River hospital mortuary.
Inside the ill-fated bus
She was inside the ill-fated bus when the trailer rammed into it.
Alor Setar Wanita Umno chief Sharifah Maznah Syed Kassim said Basarah and several others had come down from their bus to help the students.
They managed to take three students out of the overturned bus before the trailer hit it.
"Our driver asked us to return to our bus because of the danger that the other bus might explode. We went in but realised that Basarah was not with us," she said.
"We returned to the scene and were told that she had died in the accident."
She recalled hearing cries from the students and tried to help them in the darkness.
Md Tahir also said investigation was under way. He did not rule out negligence as the cause.
The rest of the group sustained minor injuries and were given outpatient treatment at the Slim River hospital.
The 25-year-old bus driver and the driver of the trailer lorry have been detained for questioning.
There were 41 people in the chartered bus comprising 36 students, three teachers and two drivers.
