Kelantan prince sues Malay Mail for RM50mil

Kelantan prince Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra has filed a RM50 million defamation suit against the Malay Mail and three other parties, in relation to an article linking him to the shooting of palace guard Ramli Mohamed.

Kelantan prince Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra has filed a RM50 million defamation suit against the Malay Mail and three other parties, in relation to an article linking him to the shooting of palace guard Ramli Mohamed.
Tengku Muhammad Fakhry filed the suit through Messrs A S Dhaliwal at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.
He named Malay Mail Sdn Bhd as first defendant and its publisher The New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd, chief editor Yushaimi Maulud Yahya and reporter Marhalim Abbas as second, third and fourth defendants respectively.
In his statement of claim, the prince alleged that the defendants were responsible for posting an article in the Malay Mail online news portal on May 5 2010, which jeorpadised his reputation, position and career.
He claimed that the article gave an impression of him as unprincipled, not trustworthy, a criminal and a traitor.
The claim also stated that following the article, Tengku Muhammad Fakhry was stripped of his temenggong title, verbally abused and looked down upon by society.
As a result of the article, he claimed his relationship with his mother, the Raja Perempuan Kelantan was strained and only reverted back to normal after the Coroner's Court returned an open verdict on the case and he was not charged by the police.
Apart from the RM50 million in damages, Tengku Muhammad Fakhry is seeking a published apology, an injunction to prevent repetition of the article and exemplary damages and other costs deemed fit by the court.
