DAP: More time needed to verify 'dubious' voters

The deadline to verify 42,000 'dubious' voters in the electoral roll ended 'quietly' yesterday, without the affected voters being informed, an opposition MP says.
In light of this, said DAP's Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, the Election Commission (EC) should extend the verification exercise by a month so that there is adequate time to carry it out properly.
"Also, I want EC to inform the affected voters by mail, and put the information online," Fong (on right in picture) told a press conference today.
During the past week, he said, the EC had provided information on dubious voters to the public in a very ineffective manner - merely by displaying the list of these voters at certain places, such as Rukun Tetangga bases, multipurpose halls and the EC office.
"When we checked through the EC website, they are still legitimate voters. We have not seen any EC notices in newspapers to inform the people," Fong said.
Fong said the information he obtained from the EC was that some 620 legitimate voters were awam diragui (generally dubious) and there was no further elaboration.
He said his office called up the EC to check for reasons and learnt that the name and age could be factors, besides some who had not changed their identity cards to the MyKad.
"I have a case of 89-year-old voter displayed on the list," Fong said.
Another problem the EC faced was that a number of Chinese names were the same, one example being the name 'Tan Ah Kow'.
The EC announced last week that it would display the list containing the names of 42,051 voters in the roll whose records it could not verify, for a week from Oct 27. The dateline ended yesterday.
