Yesterday was one of the few times that wives of politicians became the focus of attention and the attention came from Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo.

He said that the wife's performance will be one of the criteria used in the nomination of a candidate in the next general election among the Barisan Nasional elected representatives.

Mohd Khir who is also Selangor BN chief was quoted by Bernama as saying that an elected representative with a wife who was active in activities of Balkis, the charitable and welfare body of wives of Selangor elected representatives, would have a better chance of being renominated.

Not active, less marks

In addition, the wife must also play an important role in helping her husband to discharge his duties as an elected representative, he told reporters after presenting Hari Raya goodies contributed by Balkis and Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad (PNSB) for the needy in Shah Alam.

The menteri besar said an elected representative with a wife who was not active in charitable activities would score less marks.

But the wife might just be nominated as candidate herself if she was more active than her husband, he added.
